Fast symbol recognition for dislexic people

My fellow student Chris approached me and asked me to do a project with him. He got contacted by a third party to realise a program to help opticans diagnose and treat a special form of dyslexia, where slow and strenuous reading is a result of the brain being unable to quickly recognise symbols. The idea is simple: Quickly flash a symbol onto the screen, then ask the person to identify it. This is hard for them at first, but is actually trainable. Surprisingly, that was usually done mechanically. Until one optican decided to ask us, that is.

We had to realise two modes of operation. The first displays a 9 x 9 grid - similar to the well known Tic-Tac-Toe game - that displays random symbols within the grid - The patient is asked to recount place and type of the symbols. In the second mode, whole words flash over the screen letter by letter - The patient is asked what the sentence spelled out.

So this is the complete set of features:

• Two modes of operation as explained above
• All parameters are editable and saveable as a training file for each patient
• Dictionary for automatic word selection.
